Chapter Thirteen

Bare trees lined the streets as Liam drove my car out of his neighborhood and in the direction of my house. There wasn’t much I could do to help with opening the safe, not with my energy as dwindled as it had been. Somehow, Liam was making every single green light along the way. He hadn’t wanted me driving myself home in the state I was in. Stubbornly, I had tried to put up a fight, but when I’d stumbled on the way down the hall, with Jack barely catching me in time before my body hit the floor, I conceded and agreed to let Liam drive. I wasn’t sure how he planned to get home though. It was pouring rain and would be too long of a walk. He’d probably have to call a cab. Again, I was wishing I knew the self-driving spell Alexis used. Not that I minded Liam’s company. I just didn’t want to burden him.

With the movement of the car and the gloominess of the day, I was nearly falling asleep in the passenger seat. The thought of going to work made me audibly groan, at which Liam took his awareness off the steering wheel, instead bringing the attention of his brilliant blue eyes to me. I shook my head at him while I sighed and rested my head against the window. Tomorrow was going to be another long shift and walking was going to be mandatory. I scanned my brain, trying to think of a potion I could make to restore my strength, but I had never needed one before. That meant I was going to have to consult my spell books—if I could keep my eyes open.

Asking Alexis for help with this was out of the question. She was upset enough with me for the time being. There was no need to worry her any further. She was concerned for both me and for the coven. I couldn’t fault her for that. Even if I thought her concern was unwarranted.

When Liam got to my house, again without the need for any direction, he got out of the driver’s side, walked over to my side of the car and opened the passenger door before I had even reached for the handle. He tried to help me out but I batted his hand away. I did not like being the weak damsel in distress. Liam’s eyes rolled as he held the door open wide, one arm stretched out. I assumed to catch me if I needed.

It took me far longer to get out of the car than it would have if I’d taken his help. I’d already had my quota of helplessness today when he’d had to hold me for over an hour as I lay, too weak to move after the powerful spell to break his mother’s magic.

I made it to the door and smiled proudly up at the handsome man inches away from me. He didn’t look impressed.

Liam took the housekey I’d fumbled for in my bag out of my hand and unlocked the solid wood door.
